What is the best city to “get discovered” as an ARTIST?
LA or NYC?
Actors, actress, dancers, singers, models, writers and other artist move to LA, or NYC hoping to be “discovered” and some times it happens, but when and where is the biggest question?
LA.com has their own list of the top 10 places to get discovered in Hollywood , and some of them are even in Hollywood.
1. The Stand–Century City It is but a humble hot dog stand, but it’s on the CAA premises. How alluringly can you navigate your chili dog for the men in suits?
2. Hotel Cafe This music venue keeps itself out of the tabloids, but it’s actually one of Hollywood’s most respected spots for indie acts and big stars looking for a small venue. Plenty of music-industry heavies hang here.
3. Fred Segal—West Hollywood It’s not just a huge, fancy department store. It’s also a celebrity magnet, a paparazzi haunt, and a favorite among ladies (and gentlemen) who lunch. Working here or just standing around looking fabulous could lead to a big break.
4. Cut Wolfgang Puck’s latest (and maybe greatest) has increased the celebrity presence at the Beverly Wilshire more than ever. But it’s the faces you don’t recognize that can make someone’s career: agents, producers and moguls.
5. Tuesday at Guy’s With no sign and a subdued location, Guy’s is a secret garden for the young and wealthy. Tuesday night’s host karaoke: Singing a Christina Aguilera song is scary, sure, but what if you nail it while she and her people are in the audience?
6. Writer’s Bar at Raffles L’Ermitage Beverly Hills Shhh….people need to concentrate. Actually, not much writing goes on here, just plenty of Industry meeting and greeting.
7. Millennium Dance Complex Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake are but two of the stars who have trained here, and J. Lo chose it as the spot for her tightly scripted reality show about up-and-coming dancers. If already being on TV isn’t a way to get discovered, we don’t know what is.
8. Equinox Spa The Century City location is buzzing with Industry folk pretending to relax while actually working on their next deal.
9. Chateau Marmont This legendary hotel is never short on star wattage or producer power. The bar, the pool and the impromptu parties that spring up in the rooms are all good places to be.
10. Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills As the go-to hotel for press junkets and swag suites, this place is always jumping with power players. Just wandering the halls may put you in sight of a director like Quentin Tarantino. The rest is up to you.
NYC is definitely a city to get discovered, but keep in mind the bigger the city the more competition you will have so you have to always be prepared. Bigger cities offer more events that will allow you to get the exposure you need to get discovered. Here are some places to get discovered.
1. Time Square: the most busiest and alive places in New York. It’s known for its many Broadway theatres, many things to do and see. Its just a crowded place where all types of people visit. You will see all kind of people such as celebrities driving, eating, or walking by. There are tourist people lost and bumping into you, artist coming up to you asking to buy their music, and venders selling hot dogs on every corner. My point is anything is possible here.
2. Major Record Labels: Big record labels are open to the public in NYC. You don’t have full access to the building, but you could make it to the lobby and leave your music or work with the security guard. I mean really, what you have to lose. You could either wait outside of Jayz, or Pdiddy studio and when you see them just start rapping, singing or etc. Believe or not these things happen in NYC. Here are a few record labels in New York.
Def Jam
Atlantic Records
Universal Records
Jive Records
Columbia Records
Epic Records
These are some of the many. Here’s a site that list tons of record labels in NYC @ betise.tripod.com/literary/id161.html.
3. 42nd Street- This is another busy and live place where many people crowd the streets. You can perform on the streets of NYC whether it is dancing, singing, painting or rapping. This is a land of opportunity.
4. MTV studios- They offer internships here for college students see more @ MTV.com
5. BET Studios- You can get an opportunity to perform live on BET stage visit Bet
As you can see New York has many places where you can be discovered. Also, there are tons of places to work on you craft. Now the next question is where are you most likely to get discovered is it LA or NYC?
